North Carolina angler Hank Cherry celebrated his 52nd birthday in grand style by clinching his first Progressive Bassmaster Elite Series victory at Lake Guntersville. Cherry amassed a four-day total of 88 pounds, 11 ounces, culminating in a tournament-best 27-pound, 11-ounce haul on the final day. This impressive performance edged out Arkansas pro Stetson Blaylock by 1 pound, 13 ounces, securing Cherry the $100,000 top prize.
Cherry's triumph was particularly poignant as he dedicated the win to his father, Harold Sr., who introduced him to fishing. Employing a nostalgic approach, Cherry relied on a chartreuse pepper curly tail grub on a 1/8-ounce ball-head jig—a technique reminiscent of his early fishing days because he figured that fish haven't sen a lot of grubs lately. He focused his efforts in the Alred Creek area, targeting grass lines rich with baitfish and minimal boat traffic.
The victory adds to Cherry's impressive resume, which includes back-to-back Bassmaster Classic titles in 2020 and 2021. His consistent performance at Lake Guntersville underscores his affinity for the venue, where he previously secured a Classic win.
With this win, Cherry not only celebrates a personal milestone but also takes an early lead in the 2026 Angler of the Year standings, setting a strong tone for the season ahead.
